Residues have collected on what was once your clean, smooth, close fitting pistons, bearings, valves, fuel, combustion and oiling systems.

In a new motor, combustion from one cylinder, having the least possible resistance and no deterring factors, should spin the motor 2 revolutions.

Sticky rings and valves become lazy. Valves close slower and while still closing, the piston will push back out a bit of fuel, reducing full horsepower development.
That upsets conditions causing spark to fail, causes rough idle, mysterious stalling. And...
In that situation, less combustion horsepower is developed and may only spin the motor 1 3/4, instead of 2 revolutions.
That slows your speed from 70 down to 65mph. To go 70, you feed the motor more fuel by pressing the gas pedal down - unconsciously. Fuel economy drops of course.
